3-POINT RETRACTABLE SHOULDER BELTS

My car came with the stock lap belts, which are just about worthless in my opinion...   ...unless you are into self-inflicted bifurcation at the abdomen.  I had seen Andrew Murphy's beautiful car on a few occasions and really like his seat belts.  His are 3-point red retractable belts from a Nissan Sentra that are mounted on the roll bar.

So, I decided to copy him.

I purchased my belts from Wesco Performance.  The one challenge is that the mounting holes for the seat belts are 1/2"!  Thus, I had to buy huge 1/2" Grade 8 bolts for mounting.  The photos below show how I did it.

Yikes! My rollbar looks pretty beat up in this photo.  I will upholster it in the future.  As can be seen the top hook support is mounted with a 1/2" bolt through the roll bar.

Here is a shot looking down to the floor.  I likewise mounted the retractor using a 1/2" bolt through the roll bar.  For the other two mounting locations, I used the stock mounting locations.  Unfortunately the stock bolts are smaller than 1/2" diameter so I am not getting ideal bearing inside the 1/2" diameter holes in the seat belts.  Therefore, I used a number of oversized washers in the hope that it may help upon impact.  The better way to go would be to use smaller bolts and shouldered washers like the stock belts use.  I guess I could have a machinist make some.

I have been very happy with the belts.  They fit comfortably and unlike harnesses, you can actually lean over to open your glove box, turn knobs on the dash, etc.  I hope to never test them.
